Welcome to the 'Advice Section' of our website.  We know that often parents/carers of BESD children feel isolated and are unsure of where to turn for help and advice.  At Northern House School we have a wealth of experience dealing with behavioural issues.  We also welcome queries from colleagues in mainstream schools.

ADDIS The National Attention Deficit Disorder Information and Support Service.
We provide people-friendly information and resources about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder to anyone who needs assistance - parents, sufferers, teachers or health professionals. Whatever you're looking for in ADHD, we'll do our best to help.

 

Advisory Centre for Education (ACE) is an independent registered charity, which offers information about state education in England and Wales for parents of school age children.

We offer free telephone advice on many subjects like exclusion from school, bullying, special educational needs and school admission appeals.

 

Autism - The National Autistic Society champions the rights and interests of all people with autism and ensures that they and their families receive quality services appropriate to their needs.  
The website includes information about autism and Asperger syndrome, the NAS and its services and activities.

 

Autism, Aspergers and pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) 

Autism, Asperger's syndrome and PPD can dramatically affect a child's life, as well as that of their families, schools, friends and the wider community. This site provides over 350 fact sheets of autism-related information, with an emphasis on practical strategies, as many families cannot afford the more expensive interventions, or may be geographically isolated and cannot access autism support services.

 

Autism - Treehouse

TreeHouse is the national charity for autism education.  TreeHouse was founded in 1997 by parents of children with autism and today we campaign for better autism education nationally and run a school for children and young people with autism. TreeHouse undertakes policy and parliamentary work and research to ensure autism is a national priority, supports parents to campaign locally and offers training and consultancy on autism education.

 

Bereavement - Winston's Wish Charity Winston's Wish helps bereaved children and young people rebuild their lives after a family death. We offer practical support and guidance to families, professionals and anyone concerned about a grieving child.

 

Challenging Behaviour Foundation  The CBF exists to demonstrate that individuals with learning difficulties, who are described as having challenging behaviour, can enjoy normal life opportunities when their behaviour is properly understood and appropriately managed, and to support parents/carers to enable this to happen.

 

Children's Fund provides a responsive approach to developing services that address the difficulties faced by some children and their families. It encourages voluntary organisations, community and faith groups to work in partnership with local statutory agencies, and children, young people and their families, to deliver high-quality preventative services to meet the needs of communities.

 

Cruse Bereavement Care exists to promote the well-being of bereaved people and to enable anyone bereaved by death to understand their grief and cope with their loss. The organisation provides support and offers information, advice, education and training services.

Dyspraxia Foundation is a country Wide charity, founded in 1987 as the Dyspraxia Trust by two mothers who met at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children. After being told that their children had Dyspraxia they were astonished and dismayed to discover that no facilities existed to help or inform parents and children with the condition. They decided to form their own group to help others to help themselves.

 

Epilepsy -The National Society for Epilepsy is the largest medical charity for epilepsy in the UK. We provide information and support to professionals and people affected by epilepsy. We also provide care for people with epilepsy through medical, residential and rehabilitation services. On this site you will find up to date information on epilepsy, causes of seizures, treatment, first aid for seizures, and lifestyle issues.


Face 2 Face – the one-to-one befriending service for parents of disabled children.

Does your child have a disability or special need? Would you like to talk to another parent who understands what you are going through and can offer emotional and practical support?

 

Family Links is a registered charity promoting emotional literacy, nurturing and relationship skills in families, schools and communities through the Nurturing Programme, a series of 10-week courses for children and young people in schools and parents/carers in parenting groups. We work with, and train staff in, many statutory and voluntary organisations across the UK.
Family Links' aim is to help everyone - children and adults alike - get the best out of school and family life.

Oxfordshire Children's Information Service (OCIS)  Helping people make informed choices about childcare, services for children, young people and families, and careers in childcare.

Oxfordshire County Council It is estimated that approximately 20 per cent of pupils will have some kind of special educational need (SEN) at some time during their school life. Here you will find policy, practice and guidance on SEN.

Oxnet  Oxfordshire network of voluntary and community organisations.

 

Parent-Talk Oxfordshire Programme of Group and indivudal support and skills for Parents of 10-19 year olds.  Groups run for 12 weeks and are held regularly in Banbury and Oxford.  Contact Rosie Hill on 01865 559386  rosie.hill@oxfordshire.gov.uk.  

Ms Hill works as part of the county council's Parent-Talk Programme - and said she's never met a bad parent, just parents who struggle to control their children.

 

Parentscentre Information and support for parents on how to help with your child's learning, including advice on choosing a school and finding childcare.  Read, respond or ask a question in the 'Behaviour and discipline' section of the ParentsCentre forum. Sometimes speaking to parents and carers who have experienced the same issues and problems as you can be a great way to get valuable advice and information.

 

Primary Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (PCAMHS)  Hundreds of children and teenagers with emotional and mental health needs can receive help from a pioneering new service in Oxfordshire.  The aim is to see and treat more children at an earlier stage to nip in the bud problems which might, for example, be linked to bullying, low self-esteem, family breakdown and avoiding school.

The new Primary Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (PCAMHS) is expected to help about 2,000 families a year.

 

SeeSaw is a registered charity dedicated to providing grief and bereavement support for children in Oxfordshire, in cases where a parent or sibling has died or is dying.

Our name reflects just what our work with children is about. Grief is full of ups and downs and the difficulty is finding the balance. Through practical support and understanding, SeeSaw strives to reduce the distress of grieving children and enable families to work together through the difficult times before and after the death of a loved one.

Our support is child focused, flexible and built around the needs of the family and young person concerned.

 

Starthere  The StartHere information service is a self-help facility that links you to a wide range of services that can help when you have a problem.

It covers a broad range of issues — including health, caring, families, education, employment, benefits, wellbeing and welfare rights — giving a brief summary of the topic and signposting you to hundreds of national organisations, mostly providing FREE services.
